One of the sessions at Office 2.0 today was about the “The death of the app”. The panel included Rajen Sheth, Google Apps Product Manager and Greg Olsen, founder and CTO of Coghead.
The panel seemed to conclude that the app was not really dead, just that the old apps were being supplemented by a new type of app, one that is small, highly custom, disposable, built by users, and delivered via SaaS.
I think this is all true, but I think that perhaps the most important point was missed, and that is that applications (of all sizes) will be delivered completely differently. They will not be delivered as traditional applications (log in, navigate to where you need to go, get what you need, etc.). Rather, they will be delivered as gadgets - very specific, very custom, very small pieces of functionality that address the specific needs of the individual user.
So we will indeed see the death of the traditional application delivery method. It is going to be a gadgetized world out there.
